iPad Launches with 300,000 Sales on Day One

Apple today announced that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the USA as of midnight Saturday, April 3rd. These sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores. Apple also announced that iPad users downloaded over one million apps from Apple's App Store and over 250,000 ebooks from its iBookstore during the first day.

"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world - it's going to be a game changer. iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO

Following much of the news stories over the weekend, you would be forgiven for thinking the Apple iPad was a dedicated e-reader device like the Kindle from Amazon. I'm not entirely sure Apple banked on this understandable misconception. If the iPad is to prove a global success as a multi use touchscreen device, it will have to win over a great deal of non-book reading customers. At a writing event this weekend I asked about twenty avid writers what the iPad was and at least three quarters immediately chirped 'Oh, it's the latest thing for reading eBooks.' Right, but also kinda wrong!

the ebook sales for the iPad are astounding. I haven't seen a breakdown on this figure and will be interested how it is made up from the various publishers/distributors servicing the iPad. It seems Smashwords still haven't sorted out their issues with Amazon Kindle, but were able to get their Apple act together fairly quickly.

More to the point Eddie, a lot of commentators are asking the question, just what will Apple do/react if early sales information tells them that ebooks from companies like Smashword are faring better in the iBookstore than their own!

I'd say Apple will ride the wave, like they did when they discovered that there was money to be made on 3rd party iPhone apps and introduced iaps to iTune store. Steve + co are probably having a good ol' laugh at all the Amazon furore with the 'big' publishers. 'Small is beautiful' was/is an Apple mantra since the early days.

Don't know if this is relevant, but my sales of The West iap doubled over the weekend. It is in essence an 'enhanced' ebook with the audio/music/art component...I think we'll see more projects like this.

When I first saw the iPad features demo'd, I figured from the day Steve Jobs unveiled the iPad to the gathered global press, there would be hundreds of authors saying to themselves - 'I'm going to write my next book specifically tailored for the iPad'. I reckon by early next year we will start to see those books.
