Boon Times For Small Presses?

With the current economic strangulation forcing many publishers to let staff go, cut back on taking on authors, drop existing authors and significantly trim their scheduled titles, David Milofsky makes a valid observation in his article, ‘Small presses keep up the good fight’ in today’s Denver Post.

“One thing small presses can, and one can argue should, do is publish experimental writing that larger commercial presses might not take a chance on.”

While the economic downturn is hitting all publishers, in the longer run, this could certainly prove to be a real Indian Summer with rich pickings, new authors as well as new titles, for many small presses resulting in an unexpected growth for them in 2010.
